HOUSE IN VICTORIA by SEELEY ARCHITECTS

May 30, 2012

This house is located in Anglesea (Great Ocean Road in Victoria) and was designed by seeleyarchitects.com.au

From Architects:
The concept for the house arose from site investigations to understand the conditions, both positive and not so, which impacted on the property. From within, the shape of the roof and materials reference traditional coastal timber boat-building as well as archetypal coastal houses.

When viewed from the street, it sits discretely behind several old and gnarly Spotted Gums (Citriodora’s) with the living room and Sea deck connecting visually with the trees.

Timber-battened screens on either side of the house restrict views to the neighbouring houses and clerestory glazing and roof apertures give the occupants framed views of sky, the moon, tree tops, vegetation from all of the upper level rooms.

The exterior timbers where chosen for various reasons including their bushfire resistance characteristics…

The concrete fins inside the house, along with the burnished concrete floor, [absorbs] heat from the sun, and [radiates] it into the room after sunset.

HOUSE IN MELBOURNE by FITT DE FELICE

May 29, 2012

This Melbourne residence was designed by Fitt De Felice

From Architects:
A classic courtyard house where monolithic architectural forms are carefully composed and occasionally sliced open to filter the sun, allowing it in and screening it out variously throughout the day and throughout the seasons.

The site for this four bedroom family home is a north facing acre allotment with an exposed corner highly visible from the street. A simple composition of bold architectural forms is embedded into the natural landscape, establishing a high degree of privacy whilst simultaneously allowing a generosity of sun penetration and natural ventilation throughout the building. The architecture harnesses the sun and the wind, enveloping itself around a private courtyard that is the heart of the home.

Various wings stand sentinel around the sunny central court. The bedroom wing forms the rear bank of the courtyard, allowing each bedroom to enjoy the sunlight. Kid’s bedrooms are filled with soft light from the south, while the master bedroom opens its shaded north face onto the courtyard – providing an ideal location for surveillance of the young family at play. A second rammed earth and timber wing sits protectively between the courtyard and the street, housing the more evening-focused rumpus room and bar. A western highlight window brings a dramatic slash of light into this space throughout the day. With the generous living space flanking the courtyard to the east, and the pool deck to the west, the house becomes an abundant place for playing and entertaining for this large extended family. A highlight window sliced through the east-facing rammed earth wall provides abundant natural light which dramatically animates the living space during daytime occupation. This main living area is sheltered beneath a monumental 6 meter deep western eave onto the courtyard – straddling the length of the home and knitting the rammed earth wings together.

This is an essentially classic and timeless composition, expressive of its construction and celebratory in its purpose. Architecturally it is a raw, earthy, contemporary building that is responsive to climate, site and brief. A custom coloured rammed earth in a light travertine tone is the primary construction material, and is the foundation for the design. The high thermal mass of these walls provide a passive method of naturally moderating the internal temperature of the building – an essential and responsible ingredient. The rawness and brutality of the rammed earth is teamed with the warm richness and strength of grey iron bark timber, and dry stacked Hornsfeld brown stone, forming several design anchors across the site such as the living room fireplace and the driveway retaining wall.

WAHROONGA SCHOOL by GGF ARCHITECTS

May 28, 2012

The Wahroonga Preparatory School was designed by GGF Architects

From Architecs:
The existing school building stands in stark contrast to the church and hall complex in style and detail and has undergone numerous alterations over the years becoming less significant in the group and in the process impacting the heritage significance of adjoining items. It was decided the new works must bring together the various parts of the school building into a cohesive aesthetic. This was achieved by sheathing the building in multicoloured fibre-cement panels using the stain glass windows of the church as precedent. The added areas will facilitate new classrooms, music and art room and library.

MELBOURNE DANCE COMPANY by JOSIP KELAVA

May 21, 2012

Fantastic branding, graphic design and typography work done by Josip Kelava

From Designer:
Initially the design was just going to be used as a headline but I had to remember that dance was an expression of movement, and thus, I wanted the type to wrap around the dancer as if it was dancing on it’s own. And because the type has such sharp corners, and ballet is meant to be quite sensual, I purposely wanted this contrast in the juxtaposition.

I wanted the viewer to look at the poster and let it play in their mind, both with the harshness of the type and the softness of the dancer.Just like dancing can be interpretive differently to others, I wanted to do the same for the poster. Using the different characters within the type allowed me to do this, and overall, create a visual dance in itself.

FORTIFIED WINE PACKAGING (ROLLER DERBY COLLECTION) by STUDIO LOST & FOUND

May 18, 2012

The packaging for the Roller Derby collection was designed by Studio Lost & Found.

From Designers:
We helped Tash, a passionate fortified winemaker from Margaret River, develop the brand strategy and visual identity for her holding company Arthur Wines, and have recently had a blast working on the packaging for her first range of products called The Roller Derby Collection, which features a red fortified wine called Ruby Slipper, and a white fortified wine called Glass Slipper.

Tash’s mission is to raise the profile of fortified wines, and reposition these magical beverages for a new generation of wine enthusiasts. Featuring Dorothy Gale and Cinderella illustrated with a roller derby twist, her product packaging is sure to stand out amongst the ultra-conservative packaging that is common in the category.

The product is packaged in premium French glass with authentic Portuguese stopper corks. The labels were printed four-colour process on Fasson Estate 8 uncoated vellum paper, with a clear high-build silkscreen varnish.
